I CONTAIN MULTITUDES Millennium Park Chicago

Marinella Senatore
Chicago, 2026

For Millennium Park in Chicago, Studio Light Mariano realised a monumental six-metre-high illuminated tree designed by artist Marinella Senatore, developing a project in which structural engineering, craftsmanship and lighting technology come together to create a large-scale light sculpture for a major international urban setting.

The artwork is entirely made of steel and aluminium, materials selected to ensure structural strength, constructional precision and long-term durability. The artistic concept was translated into a complex and stable structural system, engineered to support the numerous illuminated elements while ensuring balance, visual clarity and continuity from every viewing angle.

Numerous illuminated phrases unfold around the tree, created through a meticulous handcrafted process. Each individual letter is made of metal and integrated into the structure at different angles and orientations, creating a three-dimensional composition that continuously changes according to the viewer’s perspective. Words and structure overlap and separate in space, transforming the perception of the artwork as the public moves around it.

Light therefore does not simply illuminate the sculpture: it becomes an integral part of its visual language, emphasising its depth and three-dimensional character. At the top, the large double-sided Sun becomes the focal point of the entire composition. Its radial geometry and multiple luminous tones create a chromatic progression that enhances the installation’s scenographic impact and reinforces its presence within the surrounding space.

From the engineering of the structure to the fabrication of the individual steel and aluminium components, from the handcrafted production of the letters to the integration of the lighting systems, the project reflects Studio Light Mariano’s ability to transform a large-scale artistic concept into a technically complex and highly expressive monumental light installation.

Technology, materials, words and light become part of a single design and production process, giving shape to a work of light art conceived to engage with Millennium Park and the urban landscape of Chicago.
