From 25 July to 24 October 2024, the Rotonda Diaz in Naples is hosting the installation ‘I Contain Multitudes’ by Marinella Senatore, created in collaboration with Studio Light Mariano.

The installation ‘I Contain Multitudes’, created by Marinella Senatore in collaboration with Studio Light Mariano, was conceived as a work celebrating community and participation. We at Studio Light Mariano worked closely with Marinella Senatore to bring this installation to life, placing light at its heart as a symbol of hope and rebirth. On display at the Rotonda Diaz in Naples from 25 July to 24 October 2024, the work was conceived in collaboration with students from the Melissa Bassi Higher Education Institute in Scampia, a neighbourhood marked by complexity and resilience. The initiative involves the community, embodying art as a tool for change and social cohesion.
Tragedy in Scampia and Marinella Senatore’s Response
Unfortunately, the inaugural performance scheduled for 25 July was cancelled due to the tragic news of the collapse of the balcony at the Vela Celeste in Scampia. The incident resulted in the deaths of two people and injuries to thirteen others, including seven children. This event deeply shocked the artist and her team, who decided to pay tribute to the victims by postponing the opening as a sign of respect and solidarity with the affected community.
The Message of ‘I Contain Multitudes’
‘I Contain Multitudes’ is much more than a work of art: it is a message of hope and rebirth, a tribute to the voices of those who often have none.
We at Studio Light Mariano, together with the students of Scampia, have contributed phrases and thoughts that have been incorporated into the installation, a living testament to our commitment to reflecting the history of the neighbourhood and dreaming of a different future.
Through this work, Marinella Senatore has sought to create an opportunity for personal and collective fulfilment, promoting social cohesion and valuing the active participation of citizens.
Cancellation of the Inaugural Performance
The cancellation of the performance is not merely a symbolic act, but also an invitation to reflection: in times of grief such as these, it is necessary to make room for the community’s most urgent needs. Marinella Senatore has expressed her wish to dedicate one of the two sculptures in the installation to Scampia itself, as a symbol of hope and rebirth.
This gesture is intended as a concrete sign of support for the community, recognising its resilience and strength in overcoming difficulties.
Art as a Tool for Healing and Transformation
In thanking the rescue workers and all the authorities who have worked tirelessly to deal with this tragedy, the artist reiterated his belief that art can be a powerful tool for healing and transformation. However, the priority today is to support and rebuild the community of Scampia. The installation at the Rotonda Diaz will remain open to visitors until 24 October, as a testament to the young people’s involvement, and to the beauty and strength of a community which, despite the difficulties, continues to embrace its many residents.

Marinella Senatore’s decision to dedicate the work to Scampia represents a deeply meaningful gesture, a promise of the future and a symbol of rebirth.
